Safety, a part of the work culture– There is a big difference between a safety program and a safety culture. A program has a start and end date. A culture is an environment that has a philosophy that permeates the daily activities of the organization. Safety does not exist in a vacuum. Therefore, a safety culture must be a part of the overall corporate culture to be understood and accepted as a high priority.

Gender neutrality is not about denying the differences between men and women, but rather about acknowledging that, despite their differences and unique strengths, men’s and women’s performance and value are equal.

For gender neutrality to function in its full strength, it is most important to include safety as part of the work culture. A culture that has a philosophy that permeates in the daily activities of the organisation.

Topics and instances that delve on primarily are the 3 R- Responsibility, Respect and Reliability:

We all have the responsibility to treat others with respect. If we stay aware of our responsibility and assert our rights to a respectful work environment, and reliability that we will take an important step toward celebrating gender neutrality.

However, we find ourselves interacting with people of widely different backgrounds and values at workplace. Each of us perceives and interprets the world based on our experiences and values, so we may interpret words and behavior very differently from others. Different social, cultural and gender standards can lead to very different understandings.

Thus, it is extremely important to take preventive measures and make safety a part of the work culture rather than focusing on the post-incident actions as much.

A common approach could be inclusion of a safety module. It is important to inculcate in every employee, the views and beliefs of the organisation with respect to gender neutrality, to introduce him/her to the overall harmonious work culture the organisation follows.
